Company Overview, INDESmed Canes and Crutches:

INDESmed designs and produces medical and wellness devices for the people improving the quality of life, improving the future."indesmed

This is IndesMed, a company created in 2011 by the telecommunications engineers Rafael Vidal Rodríguez and Miguel Capiello, who detected on the basis of research and own experience.

Vidal survived the Spanair accident and had a long convalescence – that crutches that are forced to carry thousands of people every day are often heavy, ugly, uncomfortable and can cause complications such as tendinitis in the hands.

“I realized that in general, in orthopedics seems to be worth everything, nobody cares aesthetics or functionality or anything and also sells everything for gold.

I was looking for something more comfortable and aesthetic, because you have enough to have an illness or an injury, so that you have to carry a device that reminds you of how bad you are, “he explains.

They began working on the idea of crutches that could be carried “as a complement” and were comfortable and light.

In 2011 they already had the product, the first crutches on the market made of carbon fiber, which he explains, “was not used for orthopedics, perhaps because it was thought unnecessary.”

Vidal explains that the crutches have another peculiarity, since they do not produce tendinitis since the design, which they have patented, was based on a medical study on the position of the hand to achieve “a neutral position, in which it is not forced” and by so do not get hurt.

They are also offered in bright colors, such as orange or purple, which “has a great influence on the psychological level”.

“This becomes an equal complement that can be glasses. These are crutches that could pass through ski poles and that take away that feeling of carrying a fret because you have a disability and you are annoyed. It is an aesthetic complement and, most importantly, you use it without getting your wrists boring, “he adds.

The first ones were sold abroad, where they believed that it was a German company, something that, according to them, many of its clients still think today, “as if good design and innovation were not made in Spain”.

In this sense, it regrets the lack of support and recognition within the borders, as they have not had any institutional support for the development of the initiative.

From March 27, they will present their products at Naidex, the largest European product fair for personal autonomy of people with disabilities, in the British city of Birmingham.

The organization has selected the Spanish crutches as candidates for the Innovation Award, which recognizes “the most innovative idea that has opened new roads stands out from competition for factors such as design, operation and effectiveness,” Naidex explains.

Vidal points out that this six-worker company, “the only Spanish company in the fair, will compete with giants in the sector” such as the multinational company Ottobock, although in Spain, where, in addition to crutches, they sell walkers and walking sticks made of carbon fiber and the same aesthetic concept, be ignored.

“The foreigners are much better with the marketing, as the company that put the crutches to the king emeritus, those who had lights. We know, because we have seen photographs of his last public appearances, that King Emeritus is now using at least two of our rods so he carries the world’s lightest rod, which is made of carbon fiber and weighs only 100 grams, with a sign That says ‘made in Spain’. Even if everyone does not know it, “he says.
