La razón puede encontrarse en diversos focos: es posible que la persona duerma demasiado durante el día, puede ser que sufra pesadillas que él interpreta como reales, o quizás acumule demasiada energía debido a una vida sedentaria. Durante el día…

1. Evita en la medida de lo posible que duerma durante el día. Disminuye o suprime por completo las cabezadas y no permitas que duerma la siesta.

2. Trata de hacer cosas con él de forma que se mantenga activo. Hazle partícipe de las tareas de la vida cotidiana, piensa en qué le gusta, en que se le daba bien hacer y anímale a que te ayude a llevar a cabo alguna tarea.

3. Planifica cada día un largo paseo para que haga ejercicio. Lo ideal es que sea siempre a la misma hora evitando las dos horas previas a dormirse (si es después de mediodía mucho mejor). El ejercicio físico le ayudará a disminuir el estrés y hará que cuando llegue la noche se encuentre relajado.

A la hora de ir a la cama…

1. Haz que haga pis justo antes de meterse en la cama. Parece una tontería, pero lo cierto es que puede reducir en gran medida los despertares nocturnos.

2. Crea un ambiente tranquilo y relajado, sin ruidos y con luz muy tenue. Cierra las cortinas o baja las persianas, de forma que la luz del amanecer no pueda despertarle. Prueba a poner un poquito de música suave que cada día le ayude a relacionar ese momento con la hora de dormir.

3. Asegúrate de que se acuesta sin hambre. Un hábito que puede ayudarle a conciliar el sueño es tomar un vaso de leche caliente justo a la hora de dormir cada noche.

Durante la noche…

1. Si se despierta en mitad de la noche, probablemente lo haga asustado. Por eso es muy importante que cuando le abordes lo hagas hablándole en un tono suave y cariñoso y que te identifiques. Lo más seguro es que se encuentre desorientado y que en ese momento no pueda reconocerte.

2. Tranquilízale, explícale que es de noche, que es hora de dormir y que todo el mundo así lo hace. Quizás te ayude colocar un reloj con números digitales grandes en su mesilla de noche, de forma que él mismo pueda comprobarlo con sus propios ojos.

3. Si sufre alucinaciones o temores durante la noche, prueba a dejar una pequeña luz auxiliar encendida en su dormitorio.

Aun haciendo todo lo anterior, a veces puede ser complicado que duerma correctamente.
